20.02.12 Atlas Ford GT40 Rebuild Part 3 -wiring the chassis

As the original guide was unusable I decided to fit a TSRF guide which popped straight in without any modification.

Then followed a few test laps to check everything was working before the tyres were trued.

There are still some details to add to the body but it was good to see the car back on the track some four decades after it was originally built...

Atlas Ford GT40 Rebuild Part 2 -chassis work and fitting the shell

Having cleaned up the chassis and replaced the rear bearings (which split on removal), I decided to add some brass pans.  These would also be useful for mounting the shell as the original mounts on the underside of the cockpit had broken.

I fashioned a pair of balsa blocks, drilled suitable holes and glued in 2mm brass nuts to line up with the holes in the chassis pans:

The body was a good press fit over the balsa blocks and so were glued inside the shell using just a little epoxy resin:

..next wiring the chassis.

14.02.12 Atlas Ford GT40 Rebuild Part 1 - the bodyshell

This model dates back to the 1960s but has since spent many a year in a sorry state and desperately in need of some TLC.  First job was to rub the shell down and repair the body as needed; a large section of the tail had been broken away and needed repairing with a combination of balsa and bodyfiller. Also, most of the detail parts such as the headlamp covers, bug deflector and filler caps had been lost so these were made from scratch using a combination of filler and plastic card.

The body repaired, I decided to finish the car as one of the 1964 Le Mans GT40s. The shell was coated with white primer followed by white gloss overall.  I then masked of the front roundal area and all of the car apart from the bonnet which was then painted a dark blue.  The artwork for the decals was prepared on the PC and printed onto clear inkject decal paper.  Once applied and dried, the whole car was given a coat of clear laquer prior to refitting the screen and interior.

Next job is to restore the chassis...

To finish off I added BWA wheel inserts and, as the chassis sits slightly below the body line, painted the visible parts matt black.
